Applicants to the Legal Scholarship Program must hold a JD degree; be a member of the bar of a state or territory; and have at least one year of experience after law school. This is an unpaid position, and legal fellows may not be employed in a legal or discharge position or paid by any institution or educational institution during their stay at USAO-DC. Will I be reimbursed for the bar exam fee? No. The program does not cover the cost of the lawyer`s exam or the cost of bar exam preparation courses. Lawyers in honoris programs have the opportunity to help formulate legal policies and strategies, investigate cases, draft legal briefs, negotiate with opposing lawyers, and plead before courts or administrative authorities. In addition, the honors class will participate in workshops and trainings that will help them develop their legal skills and introduce them to the full range of work of the New Jersey Attorney General`s Office. Lawyers selected as Legal Fellows are assigned to the Superior Court Division, the Appeal Division or the Special Procedures Division.

Law Fellows assigned to the Superior Court Division are admitted either to the Offences Unit of the General Crimes Section or to the Domestic Violence Offences Unit of the Sexual Crimes and Domestic Violence Section. The Offences Unit of the General Crimes Division prosecutes serious offences, including drug possession, common assault, possession of weapons and theft offences. The Domestic Violence Division prosecutes all forms of domestic violence, including domestic violence and domestic child abuse. Law fellows in the Appeals Division or the Special Procedures Division gain extensive experience in legal research and drafting and may have the opportunity to participate in oral arguments or hearings after sentencing.
