The Government of Tamil Nadu, by an Act of the State Legislature [Act No. 43 of 1997], established the Dr. Ambedkar University of Tamil Nadu Law for the promotion and dissemination of knowledge in legal learning, teaching and research. His Excellency Shri. K.R. Narayanan, former President of India, inaugurated it on 20 September 1997 and the university started on 3 October 1997. The university was named after the architect of the Indian constitution Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. The university is recognized by the Bar Council of India (BCI) and the University Grants Commission (UGC) (sections 2f and 12b of the UGC Act).
The university is also a member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), the Association of Commonwealth Universities of the United Kingdom and the Indian Institute of Public Administration in New Delhi.
