In the United States, the law is a postgraduate degree, so eligibility requires a bachelor`s degree (or equivalent) by August of the planned year of enrollment at HLS. The Young Women degree at HLS requires three years of full-time study, and new students begin their studies in early September each year. Please note that HLS does not offer a JD degree through part-time, distance, online or summer programs. Of course, international students may have other logistical concerns to consider when applying for Young Girls programs in another country, including student visas and high school equivalency. Law school is a good career choice for many international students. While a law job is both rewarding and lucrative, it can be difficult to get into law school. Law schools in America have increased their admission requirements in recent years and are looking for the best international and domestic students in the country. Our students come from all over the United States and from more than 80 countries around the world. Most pursue a JD (Juris Doctor) degree, while many others pursue an LL.M (Master of Laws) or S.J.D.
(Doctor of Juridical Science). Outside the classroom, there are a variety of student practice organizations, professional interest groups, social groups, and student magazines that allow students to pursue many interests. Qualifications for enrollment at JD are based on factors relevant to the legal profession and enroll a diverse student body with a variety of perspectives, experiences, and perspectives that enhance the educational experience for all students. Proven academic skills, as demonstrated by undergraduate grade point average and LSAT or GRE scores, are important criteria for admission. However, the university`s policy is consistent with Texas regulations that no single criterion can be used as the sole determinant of admission status, nor can any fixed weight be applied to a criterion during the admissions process; Therefore, the personal statement, letter of recommendation, CV and optional statements are extremely important in the decision-making process. All files get full validation and many factors are taken into account. Many students don`t know how to prepare for law school. Getting into law school is not an easy task for many international students, and there is certainly some preparation needed to succeed in their endeavors. Law schools are becoming more competitive each year as they see an increase in applications. To successfully enter law school, there are a few things students can do to ensure they are ready. Brooklyn Law School requires that your foreign transcripts be submitted through the LSAC Credential Assembly Service (CAS).
If you obtained your post-secondary degree outside the United States (including its territories) or Canada, you must use this service to evaluate your foreign transcripts. The only exception to this requirement is if you have completed your studies abroad as part of a study abroad program, consortium, or exchange program sponsored by a U.S. or Canadian institution, and the work is clearly marked as such on the transcript from the home campus. Our Young Girls program typically has a small number of international students each year, with approximately 185 to 195 students in each class. Many of our international students typically earned a bachelor`s degree from a college or university in the United States before entering law school, and they plan to stay here after graduating from JD. Occasionally, we receive applications from international applicants who have not received a degree or who have not met the educational requirements for master`s or bachelor`s degrees in their own country. The Faculty of Law will, in exceptional cases, consider applications from candidates who have completed 75% of the degree courses of a university or college in their own country. In recent years, however, no international applicants have been accepted into the student body who did not have a degree before applying to law school. According to ABA 503 and Interpretation 503-3, the University of Houston Law Center may admit up to 10% of its JD.class students enrolled on the main campus of the University of Houston without an LSAT candidate score, provided that (1) the student has reached the 85th percentile on the ACT or SAT and (2) the student either in the top 10% of the undergraduate class or a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher after six semesters of academic work. Three types of students can apply to the HLS J.D. program: (1) regular JD applicants, (2) Junior Deferral Program (JDP) applicants, and (3) transfer candidates. Each year, the Faculty of Law receives a number of inquiries from potential international students about opportunities at the Faculty of Law.
The School of Law offers a three-year Doctor of Laws program, a one-year Master of Laws program, and a JSD program for graduates of a U.S. Master of Laws program who wish to write a thesis supervised by a member of our faculty. The following information is a brief description of our programs. The JD degree is a U.S. law program that allows a graduate to become a practicing attorney in the United States, although HLS offers a comprehensive program in international law. To practice in the United States, one must first pass the bar exam for a specific state (more details below). Many students do this in the summer after graduation and take the exam towards the end of July. Please note that it usually takes longer to obtain foreign transcripts, so take this into account for exam periods. Financial aid for international students is very similar to financial aid for domestic students: Yale Law School covers 100% of proven financial need with a combination of loans and scholarships. All JD applicants must submit the Law School Admission Test (LSAT), Graduate Record Examination (GRE), or Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) (more information about the GMAT can be found here), unless you earned your LL.M.
degree from the University of Chicago School of Law and are applying as a transfer student with equivalencies. International applicants who have already earned a Bachelor of Laws degree (which would allow them to apply for admission to the bar in their own common law country) or a Master of Laws degree from another U.S. law school can apply to the JD program as a transfer student and apply one year in advance. Applicants applying for an advanced year of status must apply to the Young Women program through our transfer application process (instead of the regular JD application process), as well as students who have completed the first year at another law school in the United States. The transfer application process takes place in the spring and summer. All applicants interested in the Young Women program must receive the JD application electronically through the Law School Admission Council (LSAC) flexible application. Please note that students who have already earned an LL.M are eligible to apply to Harvard Law School for a JD degree. However, HLS does not offer equivalency or transfer credits from the LL.M to J.D. program.
The University of Houston Law Center requires foreign applicants to the Young Women program to submit their foreign transcripts through the Law School Admissions Council Credential Assembly Service (“CAS”). This service is included in the LSDAS subscription fee. If you have completed post-secondary education outside the United States (including its territories) or Canada, you must use this service to evaluate your foreign transcripts. A foreign credential assessment is conducted by the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (“AACRAO”), which is included in your LSDAS report. If you are an international and documented applicant looking for information on visas, immigration, etc., it is recommended to read the information provided by Harvard`s international office. Applicants to the part-time evening program are encouraged to complete the LSAT by March. However, LSAT results for June are taken into account based on available space. Applicants who need a student visa must pass the November Administration LSAT.
Applicants must pass the LSAT no later than September in order to receive a prompt decision review. A quick decision is not binding. The Law Center accepts TOEFL and IELTS exams. TOEFL and IELTS scores must also be submitted to the CAS by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). Your score will be included in your CAS Law School report. The admissions committee assesses academic achievement through a comprehensive review of all official transcripts, including international transcripts, in the LSAC CAS report.
LSAC determines the equivalency of the U.S. baccalaureate and calculates CGPA from international transcripts as required.
